When it’s a chilly morning, which room of your house is the coziest? Is it your bedroom or living room where there is a soft and welcoming carpet for you to walk on? Those are two of our favorite rooms on a chilly morning, too.

When it comes to flooring, carpet is a common choice. But just like with any other flooring option, carpet will also not stand the test of time.

While regular cleaning can help prolong your carpet’s lifespan, there will come a time when you’ll have to decide whether it is finally time to replace your carpet. But how do you know when it’s time to replace? Well, if you’re asking yourself that question, you’ve come to the right place.

Read on below to learn 8 different reasons why your carpet may need to be replaced.

  1. Your carpet is old

While carpets can last anywhere from 5-15 years, the longevity of your carpet will be dependent on the quality, padding, and how much traffic that area of your home gets. Your carpet’s age will begin to show if the quality is subpar, there is limited padding, and your carpet regularly sees a high amount of traffic.

On the other hand, if your carpet is 15 years old, it’s probably also time to replace it because what was on-trend a decade ago, probably isn’t on trend today. Additionally, when a carpet ages it harms the air quality of your home so when you replace your carpet you aren’t only opting for a comfortable upgrade, but you’re also improving your home’s air quality.

  1. You aren’t a fan of the color or pattern anymore

What you may have loved a few years ago, you may hate now – and that’s okay if that happens. Carpet stores sell carpets in any color and pattern you can imagine. If you are replacing a carpet because the color you selected previously makes your home look dated, maybe this time you should opt for a more neutral color tone or pattern. That way you won’t look into replacing your carpet as frequently.

  1. Your carpet is stained

Stains happen. If you have one stain, it may be easy to cover it up with a piece of furniture, but if you have multiple stains, it’s probably time to replace your carpet. When even a small remnant of a stain lingers on your carpet, that liquid can begin to seep into the carpet fibers and stain the padding as well. Other stains are difficult to remove even after you’ve tried every DIY stain-removal option you could find and if that’s the case, it’s best to just replace your carpet.

  1. Your carpet has signs of wear and tear

The more a carpet is walked on, and the longer heavy furniture sits on top of a carpet, the quicker you’ll see visible signs of wear and tear. After a long time, your carpet will look matted, and this wear and tear can actually be permanent damage to your carpet. Wear and tear could mean that your carpet’s color is faded, that your carpet has a rip in it, or that your carpet has a permanent wrinkle in it. While smaller signs of this can be temporarily fixed, you won’t be able to find a long-term solution.

  1. Your carpet smells

One of the most common reasons why a carpet needs to be replaced is because it smells. No one wants their home to smell but if the smell is coming from your carpet, the only way to rid your home of the smell is to replace your carpet. That bad odor may be an indicator of mold or a pet stain so it’s important to not ignore any smells. A professional cleaning service may provide a short-term solution but if the cause of the smell has penetrated deep into the carpet, then the smell may linger even after it is cleaned.

  1. Your carpet has collected a lot of dust, dirt, and/or hair

If your carpet has collected a ton of dust, dirt, and hair then your carpet has also likely become an eyesore. As much as you may try to vacuum and clean your carpet, sometimes it can feel like no matter what you do, you’re unable to rid your carpet of those things. The longer you have owned a carpet, the more particles it houses and so while it may be an eyesore, it’s also good for your living environment to replace it.

  1. You experience allergy symptoms

While many things can cause allergies, if you have sudden allergy symptoms, your old carpet may be to blame. Just like your carpet can collect dust, dirt, and hair, it can also collect allergens. The older a carpet is, the more it can house these allergens. The quickest way to get rid of any sudden allergy symptoms is by replacing your carpet.

  1. You are selling your home

One of the simplest ways to increase your home’s value if you are looking to sell is by replacing your carpet. When potential buyers see a carpet that they’ll need to replace, they suddenly are crunching numbers related to how much that will cost them. Beyond that, these buyers will now look at other aspects of your home wondering if those aspects need to be updated and replaced as well. Making this simple update can save buyers and increase your home’s sale price.
