The Most Difficult Things in Your Home To Move

Moving is a challenging experience.  Packing everything in your old home so it can be transported then unpacked at your new home is a very involved process. Moving items that are large, heavy, unique, or extraordinarily valuable adds another level of stress. Doing this safely and effectively requires special expertise, skills, and equipment.

If you are in the planning stage of moving your home, here are some items that need special attention during the moving process.

Pianos

Typically the heaviest, bulkiest, and largest item in most peoples’ houses, pianos often cause some of the highest stress in a home move.

But Pianos are especially challenging for other reasons as well. Their exteriors are beautifully finished and their interiors are filled with delicate internal components.

For these reasons, some homeowners feel their only option is leaving them behind. However, a professional moving company has specialized equipment, techniques, and skills to move your piano safely and protect it from damage.

Aquariums and fish

While moving to a new home can be stressful for your dog or cat, moving can be very disruptive for your fish.

There are steps you can take to ensure your fish and your aquarium are transported safely. On moving day, transfer the water from the tank into waterproof containers, leaving a bit in the tank to ensure the new environment matches the old one.

Carefully place your fish in waterproof containers also, and transport them in your car. Wrap and pad your tank well and be extra careful when lofting it.  Set up your aquarium in your new home right away and carefully place your fish into it.

Art and heirlooms

These items are often difficult or impossible to replace as well as fragile. For framed items, place an “X” in masking tape on the glass, wrap the corners with cardboard, and them entire item in palette paper.

For non-framed art and heirlooms, wrap them very carefully and thoroughly and place them in a reinforced container.

Large furniture, Appliances, and mattresses

Like pianos, Large furniture, appliances, and mattresses can be heavy, large, and bulky. Both protecting your items and safety or concerns.

Before moving these items, you may want to take measurements of them as well as doorways that you’ll need to go through both in your old home and at your new home. It’s also a good idea to pad corners especially of items that are hard or sharp.

Firearms

Transporting weapons, Especially guns, can be challenging across state lines. Every state laws on transporting and storing firearms are different.

Research and study the laws of your state and the state where you’ll be moving. You may also want to consult with a gun shop both where you live and where you’ll be moving to for advice and Assistance.

Plants

Wild plants can be more resilient to a home move then your pets, they are still living things and can be delicate and messy to transport. Well before moving day, transfer your plants into plastic vessels. On moving day, transport your plants in your vehicle with you to help keep them safe.

Once in your new home, let your plants sit for a while to acclimate to their new conditions before you transfer them back to their previous potting containers.
